For a brief moment, the death of Dick Clark pushed the story out of the #1 headline spot. But this morning, it is back up there again, resonating loudly particularly on Fox News. Obama’s Secret Service men engaged in sex with prostitutes in Colombia. America is outraged (or at least the major news organizations make us believe America is outraged). Government leaders have called for a condemnation of the actions. Heads should roll. Conservative officials have asked for a full investigation.
Come on folks, save your money. I can tell you what happened.
While on assignment in a foreign country where prostitution is legal, some horned up government workers wanted to contribute to the local economy after they got off the clock. They went out to The Pley Club, reportedly had a few beers, then hired some hookers. Apparently, there was a dispute over pay, otherwise we likely would have never heard anything about it. One of the prostitutes told the NY Times that the agents were “very discreet,” never mentioning they were with Obama. End of story? Not quite.
In a country like America where the puritanical zealots will toss darts at anything that doesn’t mesh with their “right” way of thinking, this is a big score. They rally the Fox News troops into a frenzy where the mere fact of two adults having consensual sex should leave us all aghast. They say it is indicative of the lax morals of America brought on by a Muslim President (who really isn’t an American in the first place and never should have been allowed to run for the office). They say we need another investigation into how this could happen, and what government secrets might have been divulged during the throws of passion.
There are those who argue that high ranking government officials should be held to a greater standard … particularly those in a high security clearance positions. But where do you draw the line? Should they not be allowed to utter swear words? Should they not be allowed to drink alcoholic beverages? If, while off the job in Carson City, Nevada, should they not be allowed to visit The Kit Kat Ranch?
Perhaps it is because I don’t live in the U.S. anymore and for the past four years have been exposed to other cultures where tolerance is not the exception, but the norm. Perhaps it is because I still believe in individual rights and freedoms. But most of all, perhaps it is because I am just plain sick and tired of hearing people try to inflict their so-called moral beliefs on everyone else. Come on, America, get over it.
